the papercutting workshop is less than a week away & i've been having a big think about my own design to take along.
papercutting is such a beautiful art form. i met rob ryan briefly at the pick me up graphics exhibition at sommerset house last year. i asked him how long his pieces take to finish. he said that it takes about 50 hours to sketch out the design & another 50 to cut out, about 2 weeks in total. i was quite surprised & thought that it would take longer but i guess nowadays he is pretty nifty with that craft knife…
via betty magazine that i blogged about recently i came across the work of lou taylor. lou has a different style of paper cutting to mr ryan & it is absolutely lovely. the alphalashes are completely incredible & so unique; they were a project commissioned by matt setchell.
my favourite of lou’s designs is pop-up-A, which is a 3d piece that was used for a really cute piece of animation for twenty-6 magazine (click on the link to have a peek):
thank you lou for sending through the images; they are wonderful.
my final discovery is elsa mora, a cuban based multimedia artist who now lives in la. her work is beautifully magical & makes me think about fairy tales.
she has a blog, dedicated solely to papercuting, ‘the heart of papercuts’, which she describes as paperland. i think i would like to visit a land of paper. these rings are amazing:
i definitely love papercutting a whole clock & hope the workshop is super-successful.
Wow, Elsa Mora's stuff is stunning! Enjoy the class!
